Before the Brief: What Makes a Website Project Actually Work
A website project usually comes up at a specific moment: a new launch, a shift in direction, or when your current site just isn't holding up anymore.
When clients come to us, it's often framed as a design problem. And it is, eventually. But the projects that move fast and land well almost always start with one thing: clarity.
Here's what we look for before we start.
A clear sense of what the site needs to do.
We usually begin here: who you're trying to reach, what you want them to understand, and what the site should help you accomplish once it's live. Having that picture early makes it much easier to make good decisions as the work unfolds.
Direction on messaging, even if it’s rough.
It doesn't need to be finalized. Even a general sense of how you talk about what you do (what matters, what needs to come across, how it should feel) goes a long way. We've found that design can support strong messaging, but it can't replace it.
A sense of scope.
What pages are needed, what already exists, and what still needs to be built. You don't need a full sitemap before we start, just a general picture of the site so we have a foundation to work from.
Someone who can make decisions.
This tends to matter more than people expect. When feedback is delayed or comes from a lot of directions, timelines stretch and the work loses momentum. A clear point of view helps the whole process move.
Enough time to do it properly.
A bit of breathing room upfront tends to make a real difference. Tight timelines can lead to shortcuts that take longer to undo than they saved in the first place.
None of this needs to be perfect before we start. But when these pieces are in place, the process is smoother and the end result tends to hold up much better. Here at Kue Studio, we spend some time upfront aligning on direction before moving into design so the work has something solid to build from.
If you're thinking about a new site, or trying to figure out why your current one isn't working, we're happy to take a look and help you think it through.
